As the Jackson Broncs gear up for the 2025 football season, the energy around the program is hard to miss. With 24 seniors returning and a full offseason under second-year head coach Keith Johnson, there’s a sense that something special is brewing on the gridiron.
The Broncs kick off their campaign on August 29th with a matchup in California against Linfield Christian. But it’s not just about football. The out-of-state trip will include a visit to Disneyland and a stop at the Rose Bowl to watch Utah square off with UCLA. For the players, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime journey, and one made possible by a lot of planning and hustle from the Broncs coaching staff, families, and the players themselves.
“These kids are earning it,” said Coach Johnson. “There are no handouts. They’ve been tasked with raising the funds for this trip. That responsibility builds character and confidence.”
Building a Program
Since taking the helm, Johnson has moved quickly to reshape the program. The roster has grown to 90 players across three teams—Varsity, JV, and Freshman/Sophomore—giving more kids an opportunity to compete, develop, and represent the Broncs.
“We know who we are,” Johnson said. “This is a gazelle-like community, filled with great athletes, loaded with speed and talent. That is our strength.”
And that speed is front and center in the Broncs’ offensive identity.
Rising-senior quarterback Grant Johnson returns to lead a potent passing attack, with all-state wide receiver Tyson Kendall as his go-to target. The backfield will get a jolt from newcomer Cooper Kintzler, who transferred in from Dubois and brings breakaway ability to the offense.
On the other side of the ball, the Broncs defense is ready to make noise. Names to watch include:
- Noah Zeleznik (OLB/TE) – a versatile athlete who thrives on both sides of the ball
- Conner Scott (DE) – relentless off the edge
- Liam Logan (CB/WR) – a two-way playmaker
- Liam McPeak – a top 50 in-state recruit with big upside
- Rigdon Hammond – a 6’2”, 225-lb wrecking ball who lines up at RB, TE, and DL
Staff Built for Success
Supporting the players is a deep and experienced coaching staff, 12 strong, with backgrounds that span from Notre Dame to the NFL:
- Jake Doss – Offensive play-caller and QB coach
- Ryan Scarola – Brings a Notre Dame pedigree
- Ted Larson – Former NFL offensive lineman
- Ryan Bell – Defensive coordinator
- Bill Wiley – Running backs coach
- Spencer King – Assistant coach with local roots
- Danny Maestas
- David Kirkpatrick
- Connor Davis
More Than Football
Coach Johnson and his staff are clear: success isn’t just measured in wins.
Their focus is just as much on developing young men as it is on drawing up plays. Weekly “Men of Honor” sessions on Thursday nights bring in speakers to talk life, leadership, and responsibility. A senior council within the team leads by example, helping to guide the younger players and set the tone for the program.
Many of us remember our high school football coach as one of the most influential people in our lives. The Broncs coaching staff takes their role seriously.
The Return of Buzz
While the Broncs haven’t been to the postseason since 2022, that drought could be ending soon. And as more kids join the team, the town is taking notice. Parents, friends, and fans pack the stands. The “Black Hole”—Jackson’s raucous student section—is growing louder. And with five seniors expected to play college football, there’s plenty of talent to cheer for.
“When you win, people show up,” Johnson said. “It doesn’t matter where you are in the country—winning football brings energy, pride, and community. That’s what we’re building here.”
So mark your calendars. The Broncs are back, and this fall, they’re running with speed, heart, and a little bit of swagger.
