Wyoming’s August gaming numbers are in, and, shock of shocks, the state is still galloping on the back of Historic Horse Racing (HHR), while online sports betting continues to play the role of “cute little side project.”
Total gaming handle for August: $242.8 million.
Breakdown by category:
| Category | Handle / Wagers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Live Horse Racing | $1.15M | The smallest kid at recess—still trying. |
| Simulcast Racing | $513K | “Let’s watch horses run in another state!” crowd. |
| Historic Horse Racing (HHR) | $222.4M | Wyoming’s cash cow (or horse). 92% of total gaming. |
| Advanced Deposit Wagering | $305K | Basically pocket change. |
| Skill-Based Amusement Games | $2.95M Net Proceeds | Bars and arcades pulling their weight. |
| Online Sports Betting | $15.5M | Yes, still an afterthought compared to HHR. |
Total online sports betting handle in August: $15.5 million.
Here’s the breakdown by by sportsbook operator:
| Operator | Handle | Gross Gaming Revenue | Tax Due |
|---|---|---|---|
| DraftKings | $8.87M | $1.39M | $94,678 |
| FanDuel | $3.23M | $630K | $48,539 |
| BetMGM | $1.93M | $351K | $24,446 |
| Caesars | $802K | $79K | $6,508 |
| Fanatics | $691K | $102K | $6,137 |
| Total | $15.5M | $2.55M | $180,307 |
Yes, DraftKings once again dwarfed the field, hauling in more than half of the state’s entire handle. Meanwhile, Caesars is pulling Wyoming numbers that wouldn’t impress at a blackjack table in Wendover.
For perspective: HHR alone brought in $222 million in handle, which means Wyomingites are betting about 14 times more on cartoon horses than they are on the NFL preseason and college football futures combined.
The bar-top and arcade machines also chipped in with $13M in revenue, $590K in taxes due. Wyoming Amusement Inc. led the pack with $2.2M in revenue, proving that sometimes it pays to be the master of claw machines and Big Buck Hunter.
Honestly, compared to the HHR behemoth, these numbers look like they were pulled from a bake sale ledger. But they do keep the “live racing” tradition alive, so there’s that.
In other words: if you’re a lawmaker or bean counter in Cheyenne, keep kissing those HHR machines. They’re paying the bills, while DraftKings and FanDuel are basically the garnish on the steak.
