Western Scholar Talk: “The 5 Things Indians Say” with Philip J. Deloria

Date:

By now, it’s no secret, I’m a big fan of our History Museum here in Jackson. Another fantastic event is coming up in mid-August, and it’s one you’ll want to add to your calendar ASAP.

📅 Thursday, August 14 | 🕡 6:30–7:30 PM

📍 History Museum Deck, 175 E Broadway Ave (Doors open at 6 PM – arrive early for a good seat!)

The Annual Western Scholar Series continues with a powerful and thought-provoking evening featuring Philip J. Deloria, a Harvard history professor and Yankton Dakota author.

In a talk titled “The 5 Things Indians Say,” Deloria will explore key questions at the heart of Native American identity and U.S. history:

  • Why do Native people emphasize that “we are still here”?
  • What really happened during the massive land transfers to the U.S.?
  • How should we understand tribal sovereignty in today’s world?

Deloria will draw from his acclaimed books, Playing Indian and Indians in Unexpected Places, while offering insights into Native innovation, cultural resilience, and global indigeneity.

This event is free and open to the public. Weather permitting, it’ll be held outdoors on the museum’s deck. Bring your questions and your curiosity.
