Ever wanted to name a mountain? No, not just shout one out on a hike and hope it sticks, this time, it’s official.
Mount Woodring, a towering 11,593-foot peak nestled between Paintbrush Canyon and Leigh Canyon in Grand Teton National Park, is in the process of getting a brand-new name.
Why? The current namesake has a questionable history, and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names (aka the people with the naming power) is ready to make a change.
The Contenders:
- Raven Peak – Mysterious. Cool. Carries major Game of Thrones energy.
- Equality Peak – Bold. Aspirational. The kind of name you put on a bumper sticker and mean it.
Teton County wants YOUR input before they send their official recommendation to the feds. So let’s pretend this is American Idol but for mountains and you’re the judge.
Here’s How to Weigh In:
🗨 Drop a comment on the Teton County Facebook post
📧 Email the County Commissioners: commissioners@tetoncountywy.gov
📍 Attend a public meeting:
- Monday, July 28 @ 9:00 a.m.
- Monday, August 4 @ 9:00 a.m.
- Location: Commissioners’ Chamber, 200 S. Willow Street, Jackson (in person or virtual)
📢 Pro tip: The more comments, the more weight your pick carries, so share this with your group chat, hiking buddies, and that one guy in your HOA who always has opinions.
⚠️ Final note: The Commissioners will submit a letter of recommendation, but the final say rests with the U.S. Board of Geographic Names. So if the mountain ends up being named “Peak McPeakface,” don’t blame us; we tried.
🏔 What’s it gonna be, Jackson? Raven or Equality? Cast your vote and help rewrite a little piece of Teton history.
