Big changes are coming just across East Broadway from St. John’s Health, and this time, it’s not a new surgical suite or specialty clinic. The long-anticipated transformation of the Hitching Post property is officially underway, bringing the promise of 72 new staff housing units closer to reality.
In a creative twist that blends progress with preservation, eighteen aging structures on the site, some more than half a century old, are being carefully dismantled and relocated rather than bulldozed. Thanks to a partnership with New West Building Company and Shacks on Racks, these buildings will get a second life, and the hospital avoids tens of thousands in demolition costs.
“Relocating these buildings marks an exciting step toward our goal of creating more long-term, livable housing that helps us retain staff,” said Sean Ryan, Director of Facilities at SJH. “It’s a win-win.”

The original Hitching Post units lacked full kitchens and the kind of amenities needed for long-term stays. The new Hitching Post Apartments will offer mostly two-bedroom units, based on staff input, and will include storage cages and a gear-tuning workspace for bikes and skis—because let’s face it, even healthcare heroes need to shred powder and spin trails in their downtime.
This major project is powered in part by SPET funding approved by voters, along with support from generous St. John’s Health Foundation donors.
“We’re grateful to the Town of Jackson, New West, and Shacks on Racks for helping us reach this next stage,” said Ryan.
A community groundbreaking is in the works for late summer, so stay tuned. Until then, expect to see some nostalgic architecture on the move—and a brighter future for local healthcare workers taking shape.
