Fall in Yellowstone is magical. The crowds thin, the mornings frost up, and wildlife basically takes over. Bulls are still bugling, bears are packing on pounds for hibernation, and bison are, well, being bison (which means traffic jams don’t stop until the snow flies).
After another massive summer of visitors to the park, lodges, campgrounds, and visitor services are shutting down on a staggered schedule, which means your window for a cozy bed, hot meal, or ranger-led lecture is rapidly closing.
Key Yellowstone Shutdown Dates
- Bridge Bay: Campground closes Aug. 31, marina on Sept. 15.
- Canyon Village: Campground closes Sept. 20. Lodging, dining, and shops roll up by Oct. 25–26. Gas pumps stick it out until Oct. 31.
- Fishing Bridge: RV park ends Oct. 11, visitor center Oct. 4.
- Grant Village / West Thumb: Campground wraps Sept. 13, stores and gas by Sept. 21, lodges and restaurants Oct. 4–5.
- Lake Yellowstone: Shops and lodging bow out between Sept. 14 and Oct. 5.
- Madison / West Yellowstone: Campground lasts until Oct. 18, info desk through Oct. 31.
- Mammoth: Visitor center is open year-round, but grills and backcountry office close Oct. 13.
- Old Faithful: Shops and dining wind down mid-October, with a few options until Halloween.
- Tower/Roosevelt: Most services already done by Aug. 31.
Why Go Now
- Wildlife is peaking: Elk are in full rut, grizzlies are on the hunt for every last calorie, and wolves are more visible as the temps drop.
- Less people, more peace: Summer traffic chaos is gone. You might actually hear the geysers instead of just car doors slamming.
- The skies put on a show: Crisp air means better stargazing and fewer headlights.
- One last hike before the snow: Trails are open, but weather is unpredictable. That moody fall mix is part of the fun.
Yellowstone doesn’t close, but most of its creature comforts do. By early October, it’s just you, the wildlife, and maybe a ranger bundled up behind a desk.
If you’ve been waiting all year for fewer crowds and more animals, this is it. Just don’t wait too long, because come Halloween, the only thing moving freely through the park will be bison, wolves, and the occasional snowplow.
