Rodeo Nights in Jackson Hole: Summer Schedule, Tickets & Insider Tips

Date:

Since 1890, the Jackson Hole Rodeo has been a cornerstone of Wyoming’s cowboy heritage. It all began when Sylvester Wilson led the first group of settlers over Teton Pass into Jackson Hole, aiming to raise cattle on the valley’s fertile grasslands. By 1911, the community’s informal contests of skill evolved into the “Jackson’s Hole Frontier Rodeo,” complete with a grandstand and racetrack, held annually during the first three days of September.

The rodeo’s early days were marked by thrilling events and colorful characters. Notably, Belle Flanders, sister of John and Jess Wort, donated approximately 40 acres for the rodeo grounds. Although her heirs reclaimed the land in the 1930s, the town purchased 25 acres, establishing the current rodeo grounds known as “Frontier Park.”

Today, the Wilson family, descendants of Sylvester Wilson, continues to uphold this tradition. Phillip Wilson and his family, spanning six generations, are deeply involved in the rodeo, from organizing events to competing in them. Their commitment ensures that the spirit of the Old West remains alive and kicking each spring and summer in Jackson Hole.
