Wyoming Whiskey’s Tribute to Grizzly 399 Raises $12,000 for Conservation

Date:

In a heartfelt homage to one of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem’s most iconic inhabitants, Wyoming Whiskey auctioned Bottle No. 399 of its limited-edition “Queen of the Tetons” bourbon, dedicated to the legendary Grizzly 399. The auction concluded with a winning bid of $12,000, with all proceeds benefiting the Grand Teton National Park Foundation’s grizzly bear conservation efforts.

Grizzly 399 captivated wildlife enthusiasts worldwide as the region’s oldest known reproducing female grizzly, raising 18 cubs over her 28-year life. Her tragic death in October 2024 near Grand Teton National Park sparked global mourning and renewed focus on wildlife protection in the area.

The auctioned bottle, numbered 399 in honor of the bear, featured a photograph of Grizzly 399 captured by renowned nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen. The auction package also included an additional sample bottle and a framed, signed print of Mangelsen’s “Spring’s Surprise,” depicting Grizzly 399 emerging from hibernation with four cubs, a rare and remarkable sight.

With only 720 bottles produced, the “Queen of the Tetons” bourbon sold out within 36 hours of its release. The bourbon is noted for its rich flavor profile, featuring notes of white chocolate mocha, red fruit, brown sugar, honey, ripe field berries, cinnamon spice, candied ginger, and soft vanilla.

This auction not only commemorates the legacy of Grizzly 399 but also reinforces Wyoming Whiskey’s commitment to conservation, ensuring that the spirit of the “Queen of the Tetons” continues to inspire and protect the wild landscapes she once roamed.
