Teton Interagency fire crews stopped forward progress of the Signal Flats Fire, which started on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26. The estimated size of the fire is just under 8 acres.

A small wildfire has ignited on the eastern flank of Signal Mountain in Grand Teton National Park, prompting a swift emergency response and the closure of Signal Mountain Road until further notice.

As of now, two helicopters and two fire engines are working to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Park rangers evacuated all visitors from the summit of Signal Mountain and the roadway earlier today as smoke became increasingly visible from multiple vantage points throughout the park. Authorities urge all visitors to remain alert, watch for emergency vehicles, and follow directions from park staff and fire crews.

This is the first wildfire reported in Grand Teton National Park this season, but it comes after a prolonged dry spell across our region. The current fire danger level is listed as “high”, meaning that new fires can start easily and spread rapidly in the dry vegetation.
