Fourth of July in Grand Teton: Pack Patience, Leave the Fireworks

Date:

If your idea of celebrating Independence Day includes soaring peaks, alpine lakes, and the possibility of a moose sighting, then Grand Teton National Park is your kind of fireworks. Just don’t bring actual fireworks (they’re illegal here, unless you count thunder).

The park is bracing for a busy Fourth of July week, and by “busy,” we mean full parking lots, jam-packed trails, and enough bear spray to fill a small warehouse. Rangers kindly ask that you plan ahead, check weather and trail conditions, and pack your patience (along with sunscreen, snacks, and your sense of wonder).

🚫 Firework Alert: Fire danger is high. That means no fireworks anywhere and campfires only in designated rings—no rogue s’mores setups, please.

🛶 Floating the Tetons? All watercraft—from motorboats to SUPs—must stop for an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection. If it floats, it gets checked.

🐻 Wildlife 101: Keep your snacks locked up, your scented lotions buried deep, and give wildlife space—100 yards for bears and wolves, 25 yards for everyone else. You will lose a staring contest with a bison.

🚧 Operational Updates:

  • Jenny Lake Canoe Launch: Closed for construction (but Rock Beach is a decent 200-yard workaround).
  • Leigh Lake Portage: Expect a reroute starting July 7. Bear box will move too, so keep your eyes peeled.
  • Moose-Wilson Road Bike Bypass: From July 1–Aug 15, cyclists can avoid the gnarly hill section via the levee road. Expert-level riders only for the Moose-Wilson climb; everyone else, hit the Grand Teton Pathway.

🎒 Bottom Line: Grand Teton is still one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Just remember, it’s not Disneyland. Be smart, be kind, and don’t be that tourist.

Happy Fourth, Jackson!
